The new Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Chris Ezike,
has asked the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil
Defence Corps in the state , Stephen Lar, to assist the police to
make the state safe .
Addressing Lar and the other senior officers of the NSCDC
during a visit to the state command ’s headquarters in
Owerri, the state capital , Ezike, said the issue of fighting
crime in any society was not restricted to one individual or
agency .
The CP posited that his command would not achieve the
desired result if it failed to collaborate with other sister
security agencies within the state .
Ezike said, “ We have resolved at the management level to
reduce crime in Imo State to a tolerable level . To do that , we
have equally resolved to partner sister security agencies .
“ No one person or agency has monopoly over crime issues .
We cannot do it alone; that is why we have come to ask for
your assistance .”
He said he had visited the state commands of the Nigeria
Immigration Service , the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria
Prisons Srvice , where he reiterated that all crime- fighting
agencies in the state must unite , share mutual intelligence ,
exchange ideas in making sure that armed robbery , cultism,
kidnapping and other associated crimes were nipped in the
bud.
In his response, Lar asserted that there was no controversy
surrounding the fact that the police were the lead internal
security agency in Nigeria , adding that the NSCDC and other
security agencies were established to complement the police
in eradicating crimes .
The Commandant said , “ There is no argument about it . Police
is the lead internal security agency in Nigeria . Other security
agencies were established to complement your efforts . The
NSCDC was established in 2005. So, for us , you are like our
father in this business. ”
