The leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has left Kuje prison in Abuja after spending close to two years of detention by the Nigerian government.

A prison source told our Ifeanyicy.com that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu left the prison yard a few minutes ago after fulfilling his bail conditions, however, his co-defendants in a treason trial remained in detention.

Nnamdi Kanu’s stringent bail conditions were met after Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Immanu-El Shalom (Jewish High Priest) and Mr. Tochukwu Uchendu (Abuja-based Chartered Accountant) signed the bail bonds as sureties. So many Igbo leaders were seen in prison in solidarity, including former Minister, Chief Osita Chidioka who was spotted driving Mazi Nnamdi Kanu out of prison premises with his car.

Earlier this week, a Federal High Court in Abuja, citing concerns about Mr. Kanu’s health, granted bail to the separatist agitator on stringent conditions.

His lawyer, Ejiofor said his client met all outstanding conditions on Friday and was released shortly after all necessary documents were signed by the trial judge.

“Nnamdi Kanu left the prison at about 5pm after meeting the bail conditions,” Ejiofor told.

Justice Nyako had on Tuesday granted bail to Kanu, who along with three others are being prosecuted on charges bordering on treasonable charges.

She said Kanu was granted bail on health grounds.

The judge however barred the IPOB leader from granting press interview while on bail.

The judge also gave a stern warning to the defendant not to participate in any rally or be found in a crowd of more than 10 persons in the course of the bail.

Former Imo State Governor, Achike Udenwa has stated it clearly that the Imo State PDP has no faction.
 

It could be recalled that in recent times, the party tends to be split into the sheriff and the Makarfi factions.

Dr. Udenwa thereby called upon all the members to begin to mobilize at the ward level, adding that the Makarfi group has a plan B if the court judgment favours the sheriff camp.

Chief Udenwa made this call at the last  meeting of the Imo State PDP members held recently at the country home of the Federal Member representing Owerri Zone at the Constituency level, Chief Ezenwa Onyewuchi.

Today being Thursday, the Nigerian Naira depreciated slightly against the dollar at the parallel market.

According to NAN Reports, the Nigerian currency lost two points to close at N390 to the dollar, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro traded at N495 and N415, respectively.

At the Bureau De Change (BDC) window, the naira was sold at N362, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N490 and N420, respectively.

Trading at the interbank window saw the naira close at N305.85 to the dollar.
The naira, however, appreciated marginally at the investment and export window, as it closed at N379.04, from the N379.89 it opened earlier today.
Traders at the market were hopeful that the naira would bounce back as the CBN sustained liquidity boost at the BDC subsector.

The Nigerian Police Force has been accused of stealing the relevant documents needed to process and pass the 2017 budget, during the period of raiding the official residence of the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Danjuma Goje.

According to the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, the Police had informally told the Senate Committee on Police Affairs that the operation was carried out based on a wrong information from a whistle-blower. He, however, insisted that the Senate would not take that excuse as he declared that an immediate official explanation must be provided to the Senate on the operation. He said:

“This matter is very serious just as Senator Goje has said. It is now over five days with no statement or comments from the Police to tell us why this raid was done or to tell us where these files which are very important to the appropriation process are. If somebody has given you any wrong information, tell the public what you are doing with that person and if it is an intelligence officer that got the house wrong, come out and tell us. For five days now, nothing. I think it is unfortunate. I also got an information that the House of Representatives has also set up an adhoc committee on this matter and this committee that is set up should work closely with the House, particularly to ascertain the circumstances surrounding why they went to Senator Goje’s house. If truly it was a whistle-blower and he gave them wrong information, which is what the IG is telling them, what are they doing about that  wrong information? Have they come out to make a public apology for this wrong raid? These are issues that the committee would look into and the files that are still in Police custody which Goje has told us is affecting the works before us, also needs to be brought publicly and formally to him because it was taken publicly.”

The Adhoc committee has Jibril Barau (APC, Kano State) as chairman. Other members are Isa Misau (APC, Bauchi State), Chukwuka Utazi (PDP, Enugu), David Umoru (APC, Niger State).

Briefing the Senate earlier, Goje said the policemen took N18 million, $19,000 and 4,000 Saudi Riyadh from his house after the operation. He said:

“In addition, they also took my laptop; and to make matters worse they took 18 files from my office. I am so traumatised… I don’t know which files is missing, which files is available now. Some of these files have to do with the work I am doing. Like I told you, we are holding a meeting on the budget that last Thursday that they came. So, from Thursday to now we have not been able to meet because some of the papers are not around, many of us are traumatised, my house as a politician is a beehive of activities; people are coming from all over the country to sympathise with me. I have no time to sit; and from today, we are trying to start sitting again as appropriation committee to see what we can do with the budget. I want to apologise to my colleagues that we could not keep to the timetable you gave us to lay the budget yesterday (Tuesday) and to get it passed (Wednesday); and I think it is not our own fault, it is the fault of the police because the police interfered with the whole of the budget process and I hope Nigerians will not turn out to blackmail the National Assembly because the process was truncated by the police.”

An ultimatum has therefore been given to the Inspector-General of the Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to return the documents and a computer which were taken away.

Again, President Muhammadu Buhari failed to make the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting for the third consecutive time. The meeting which was held inside the council chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja was presided by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.


But Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed said Buhari was working from home. According to him, the President needed some rest and had asked that all the files on his table be brought to him at his official residence at the Presidential Villa, Abuja for treatment. Apart from Buhari, no fewer than 20 ministers were absent. Buhari has attended the council meeting only once since he returned from a medical vacation in the United Kingdom, where he spent 49 days.

Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, constitutional lawyer and rights activist has asked the government to come clean on the exact current state of the president’s health. In a statement, Ozekhome said: 

“There is nothing to be ashamed of about this. PMB is over 74, for God’s sake. Even younger elements fall ill. There is no need for a shadowing faceless cabal to hold PMB down in a simulated prison, incognito and incommunicado, denying millions of Nigerians who elected him, including those who did not, of his presence, action and Presidency. It is simply callous and inconsiderate of them. There is no need to put Nigeria on a dangerous precipice, through needless anxiety, curiosity, guesswork, permutations, doubts, analysis, gossips, rumours and conspiracy theories.”

According to him, Buhari ceased to be a private citizen from May 29, 2015, when he was sworn into office as president and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“He automatically became public property, whose deeds, misdeeds, action and inaction, are subjected to rigorous public scrutiny. This is one of the dire prices leaders pay for choosing voluntarily to be leaders. PMB can return to the UK for further medical attention, and rest, whilst his Vice, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, acts in his place. This happened before for 49 days and heavens did not fall.  Heavens will not now fall.”
