The Deputy Senate President, Sen Ike Ekweremadu has bitterly lamented how his house was raided yesterday by the Nigeria Police Force from the Inspector General of Police Special Squad, noting that nothing incriminating was found at the end of the exercise.

“It’s a calculated attempt,” he simply described the raid.

Ekweremadu in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Uche Anichukwu said the incident happened at 8 am at No. 10 Ganges Street, Maitama, Abuja. The statement reads:

“At about 8 am on Friday, May 26, 2017, men of the Nigeria Police Force from the Inspector General of Police Special Squad raided the official guest house of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, located at No. 10 Ganges Street, Maitama, Abuja. The police, however, stated at the end of the search that nothing incriminating was found.

“They met the steward, Oliver Ogenyi, and some of Ekweramdu’s staff and their children in the house. In spite of the fact that they were informed that the property is the guest house of the Deputy President of the Senate, they nevertheless proceeded to thoroughly search the house without establishing any contact with the Deputy President of the Senate or any of his senior staff. The steward was taken away by the police to the Special Anti-Robbery (SARS) Office, Garki, Abuja, where the IGP Special Squad’s office is also located. Ogenyi was later released after making a statement.

“The Deputy President of the Senate is a law-abiding citizen and does not dispute the fact that the security agencies are empowered by law to carry out searches on premises in accordance with the law. However, the law requires that the owner of the property or his representative must be informed and should be present during the search.

“Senator Ekweremadu is worried about the manner in which his guest house was raided. The questions are: Was there a search warrant? What were they looking for? Who searched the police officers before the search? Who supervised the search? “Instructively, this incident comes just a few weeks after Senator Ekweremadu, on May 3, 2017, read to the Senate in plenary a written, but anonymous tip-off by a patriotic Nigerian on a plot to plant incriminating sums of foreign currencies, arms, and ammunitions in a house linked to him under the pretext of the whistleblower policy. The aim, according to the source, was to rubbish, arrest, prosecute, and ultimately remove Senator Ekweremadu from office.”

West Ham coach, Slaven Bilic has been short of options up front in a difficult season, with Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho frequently injured.

Ifeanyicy.com reliably gathered that the 20-year-old Iheanacho has scored seven goals for Pep Guardiola's side this season, but the Nigerian international has only started one league game since the start of 2017.

And with Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus ahead of him in manager Pep Guardiola's estimations, Iheanacho may look to move for more first-team opportunities.

The Ohaji Egbema, Imo State Nigeria born Kelechi Iheanacho will take a medical at West Ham tomorrow after a £24m bid was accepted.

The Rivers State government has learnt with much relief news of the  rejection of a proposed State award, by a former governor of  the State, and current Minister for Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi.

Given Mr Amaechi's sanctimonious statement of rejection, it is important to clarify that the Rivers State Government never set out to honour Mr Amaechi for any meritorious service to the State during his time as governor.

As part of the events of the State's Golden Jubilee celebration, the State government accepted the recommendation of the organizing committee that a variety of awards be given to different categories of individuals who have earned a place in the history of the State.

There is a category of the awards designated for former governors of the State. And as a former governor, Mr Amaechi fell automatically in that category.

We wish to emphasize that the award was never meant as a validation of Mr Amaechi's horrendous administration.

Mr Amaechi was personally indicted for stealing billions of public funds during his time in office, by a court-approved panel of inquiry set up by the state government.

The government will soon initiate a prosecutorial process against him in multiple jurisdictions, in Nigeria and abroad. And no award would have stopped that process.

We must confess that as a government, we wrestled with the moral horror of giving any kind of award to a man whose government was no better than a criminal syndicate.

Mr Amaechi may be a scoundrel of  history, but he was once a governor of the state. The proposed award was to serve as a sad acknowledgement of the especially dark place he occupies in our State's otherwise illustrious history.

His rejection of the award is therefore a huge moral relief for the administration,  and the people of the state.

Signed:

Dr Austin Tam-George
Commissioner for Information and Communication,
Rivers State.
