Renowned constitutional lawyer and elder statesman, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, has described the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as a ‘great Igbo man’.

Nwabueze spoke when Kanu visited him at his Enugu residence on Tuesday.

Kanu visited Nwabueze with other leaders of a pan-Igbo group, the Eastern Consultative Assembly, including Chief Mrs. Maria Okwor, Evang. Elliot Ukoh and Rev. Fr. John Odey.

Speaking during the courtesy visit, Nwabueze said he was happy to meet Kanu, noting that the occasion was one of the ‘greatest days’ of his life.

“I must say, today is one of the greatest days in my life – meeting you.

“Whatever anybody may say, you are a great Igbo man,” the elder statesman said.

He commended Kanu for ‘fighting’ for the Igbos.

“How many of us are prepared to fight for Ndigbo? You are sticking out your neck for Ndigbo.

“We (Igbos) are supposed to be one of the leading ethnic groups in Nigeria but today we are in the minority – we have been so marginalized,” Nwabueze added.

Nwabueze, who heads a pan-Igbo group, Igbo Leaders of Thought, noted that Kanu’s case has demonstrated that repression was not the best approach to address agitations and complaints in the polity.

He said, “The case of Nnamdi Kanu is a lesson in good governance and good leadership.

“Nnamdi Kanu’s case teaches that repression is seldom the right response to complaints and agitations for amelioration in the conditions of things in the society.

“Repression seldom settles grievances. If anything, it forces them underground.”

Nwabueze, a renowned constitutional lawyer, observed that Kanu’s arrest, and long incarceration, escalated the agitation for Biafra, contrary to the expectations of the Federal Government.

“In this case, the long imprisonment of Nnamdi Kanu and his mates for demanding self determination has caused the spirit of the agitation to come to live in countless number of people of Igbo extraction.

But the elder statesman also admonished Kanu, and other pro-Biafra activists to see restructuring as the beginning of their quest for self determination.

Nwabueze said, “Another lesson to learn from Nnamdi Kanu’s case is directed to him and the other agitators.

“It is this – self determination should be a graduated process. It should begin with regional autonomy.

“The country should be restructured into six more or less self-governing zones or regions, with the powers of the central government drastically reduced, so as to minimize the fierce contest for its control.”

Kanu, in his response, said he had always hoped to meet Nwabueze.

According to him, Nwabueze has over the years displayed “so much focus and determination towards championing the cause of Ndigbo”.

The IPOB leader said he would always consult the elder statesman.

“I will continue to consult you. I plead that you make your words of wisdom available to us at all times
.

“We shall do everything possible to uphold the honour and dignity of our people,” Kanu told Nwabueze.

It would be recalled that the Eastern Consultative Assembly had elected Kanu as it’s leader while he was still in detention, a gesture with the IPOB leader accepted.

Since his release on bail, Kanu had held series of meetings with the ECA, and the group had also accompanied him to consult some Igbo leaders

Prominent Northern youth organisations, on Tuesday, rose from a joint meeting called ‘Kaduna Declaration’ to issue a serious threat to the Igbo residing in the region urging them to begin making arrangements to relocate out of the North.
The groups gave the Igbo up till October 1, this year to leave the region.
Their declaration was premised on the shut-down of major towns in south eastern part of the country on May 30, by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their sponsors.
These Northern youths organisations, which had their arrowheads in attendance, include Arewa Citizens Action for Change, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Arewa Youth Development Foundation, Arewa Students Forum and Northern Emancipation Network on The Igbo Persistence for Recession among others, stated categorically that, never again will they fold their hands and a time has come to take their destiny into their hands.
Mallam Abdulazeez Suleiman, who read the statement on behalf of others, at the popular Arewa House Kaduna, on Tuesday said, the region was tired of the marriage hence the need for restructuring as been pronounced by many notable Nigerian leaders like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Sen. Shehu Sani and others.
According to them, “The persistence for the actualisation of Biafra by the unruly Igbo of South-Eastern Nigeria has lately assumed another alarming twist which involved the forceful lockdown of activities and denial of other people’s right to free movement in the South-East by the rebel Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its overt and covert sponsors.
“This latest action and similar confrontational conducts which amount to a brutal encroachment on the rights of those termed as non-indigenous people residing and doing lawful businesses in those areas illegally demarcated and defined as Biafra by the Igbo, are downright unacceptable and shall no longer be tolerated”.
They said they observed that, concerned by the persistent Igbo threat to national integration, they had met with several others and reviewed the current position of the North and jointly came up with the declaration.
Other part of the statement read, “the Igbo people of the South-East, without remorse for the carnage they wrought on the nation in the 1960s, are today boldly reliving those sinister intentions connoted by the Biafran agitation that led to the very first bloody insurrection in Nigeria’s history.
“Emboldened by the apparent indifference of the Nigerian authorities, the Igbo secessionist tendency is widening in scope and action at every stage, with adverse effects on the law-abiding people of other regions residing in or passing through the East, while the Igbo leaders and elders by their utterances and direct action or inaction appear to support and encourage it.
“This is happening irrespective of the undisputable fact that, Igbos have done and are doing more damage to our collective nationhood than any other ethnic group; being responsible for the first violent interference with democracy in Nigeria resulting in a prolonged counter-productive chain of military dictatorship.
“It is on record that since the inception of the current democratic dispensation, the Igbos have shown and maintained open contempt and resentment for the collective decision expressed by majority of Nigerians at various stages via generally acceptable democratic processes.
“While these provocative acts of aggression persist and grow in dimension with each new move, leaders of the North whose people are at the receiving end of the threats, appear helplessly unperturbed.
“Without pursuing a resolute action-plan, these northern leaders have adopted and have been dragging its people into a pitifully pacifist position in order to sustain an elusive national cohesion that has long been ridiculed by the Igbos.
“From today, June 6, 2017, when this proclamation is signed, the North, a critical player in the Nigerian project, hereby declares that it will no longer be disposed to coexisting with the Igbos and shall take definite steps to end the partnership by pulling out of the current federal arrangement.
“This conclusion is necessitated by the realization that it since ceased to be comfortable or safe to continue sharing the same country with the ungrateful, uncultured Igbos who have exhibited reckless disrespect for the other federating units and stained the integrity of the entire nation with their insatiable criminal obsessions.
“Rather than certain sections holding the whole country to ransom at every stage, each should be allowed to go its own way as we categorically proclaim today that the North is fed up with being the same country with this pack of acrimonious Igbo partners.
“The North hereby openly calls on the authorities and other national and international stakeholders to acknowledge this declaration by taking steps to facilitate the final dissolution of this hopeless union that has never been convenient to any of the parties.
“As a first step, since the Igbo have clearly abused the unreciprocated hospitality that gave them unrestricted access to, and ownership of landed properties all over the North, our first major move shall be to reclaim, assume and assert sole ownership and control of these landed resources currently owned, rented or in any way enjoyed by the ingrate Igbo in any part of Northern Nigeria.
“Consequently, officials of the signatory groups to this declaration, are already mandated to commence immediate inventory of all properties, spaces or activity in the north currently occupied by the Igbos for forfeiture at the expiration of the ultimatum contained in this declaration.
“With the effective date of this declaration, which is today, Tuesday, June 06, 2017, all Igbos currently residing in any part of Northern Nigeria are hereby served notice to relocate within three months and all northerners residing in the East are advised likewise”.
To ensure enforcement of the directives, the groups mandated all northern civil society and pressure groups  to mobilize for sustained, coordinated campaigns at their respective State Government Houses, State Houses of Assembly, Local Government Council Secretariats and Traditional Palaces to mount pressure for steps to be taken to ensure enforcement of the directives contained thererein.
“We are hereby placing the Nigerian authorities and the entire nation on notice that as from the 1st October 2017, we shall commence the implementation of visible actions to prove to the whole world that we are no longer part of any federal union that should do with the Igbos.
“From that date, effective, peaceful and safe mop-up of all the remnants of the stubborn Igbos that neglect to heed this quit notice shall commence to finally eject them from every part of the North.
“And finally, all authorities, individuals or groups are hereby advised against attempting to undermine this declaration by insisting on this union with the Igbos who have thus far proved to be an unnecessary baggage carried too far and for too long.

Professor Adeolu Ande, a Professor of Entomology at the University of Ilorin, Adeolu has decried on the killing of mosquitoes, saying the insects are friends to humans that deserved to be properly managed.

Prof. Ande made the statement on Monday in Ilorin in a paper he presented at a public seminar organised by the university. In his paper with the title “Consider the ways of Ants and be Wise,” the entomologist described insects as the “most successful and influential group’’ of organisms in the biosphere.
He said that humans had a lot to learn from insects in order to be wise.

He said:

“Human life is beset with inevitable associations with insects that have over the years influenced human destiny positively and negatively. Negative influences, such as disease transmission, crop losses, food spoilage, economic losses and nuisance value caused by less than 5 per cent of insect species have been exaggerated by man. The female mosquito could be described as an example of a true mother who is forced to undertake suicide mission in its bid to provide for its unborn children. The adult female mosquitoes have exceptional value for child raising hence the level of commitment and risk they take on the mission that entails decision between life and death. The after-effect of this commitment is a well thought out plan that forestalls most of the factors that may stand in the way of raising good children.
I am sure most human females will not take comparable decision in the face of similar attendant risks.
It is however certain that children born after well thought out and risky conditions are better posited for quality living than those produced carelessly."

The Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has read with reservations what one of the reputable Newspapers in the Country, THISDAY, Published on Monday, May 29, 2017 which it termed “Governors Midterm report”. We reject the report on Imo governor in its entirety because it was totally an opposite of the facts on ground. And those behind it, were tight-fisted with the truth.

In a press statement made available to Ifeanyicy.com, the Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo stated as follows:

"RE: THE THISDAY NEWSPAPER’S ASSESSMENT OF GOVERNOR ROCHAS OKOROCHA IN WHAT IT DESCRIBED AS “GOVERNORS’ MIDTERM REPORT”, ON MONDAY, MAY 29, 2017:

OUR CONCERN

Governor Rochas Okorocha and the Rescue Mission Government he superintends have tremendous respect for the THISDAY Newspapers. Ditto, the Editors. And the Governor would continue to hold them in high esteem. We also know that, in a report of that nature, Editors would depend on their state Correspondents to feed them on the situations in the given states or send a team to the respective states on fact-finding.

On our part, the issue of a team being sent to Imo on fact-finding preceding the report in question is totally ruled out because they would not have given such disdainful report on Imo. So, we believe, the writers must have depended on the Newspaper’s Correspondent in Imo for that outing. And that is the crux of our Concern.

The THISDAY Newspaper’s Correspondent in Owerri, is from Mbaise. Those who have been following Political developments in Imo especially concerning the 2015 governorship election would understand and appreciate why it is incumbent upon us to mention where he comes from. And he was the Returning Officer for Ngor-Okpala LGA during the 2015 governorship election in the State.

Those who controlled the processes of the 2015 elections in the State with their federal might gave him that assignment. And Governor Okorocha does not believe in vendetta, otherwise we would have taken steps to make the relevant agencies find out how he assumed that responsibility and what qualified him for that role. So we don’t expect him to tell his employers the truth about the monumental achievements of Governor Okorocha in Imo for the past Six Years.

Again, sometime last year, we invited some Senior editors and Columnists to the State to come and see the amazing achievements of Owelle Okorocha as governor of the State. The THISDAY Editor, our Sister in whom we are well pleased, Ijeoma Nwaogwugwu was invited. She assured she was coming. But, about forty-eight hours to the arrival date, she called to say she had earlier booked to travel. Perhaps, if she had come, she would have told the writers the truth.
However, before reacting specifically to the issues raised in the referenced report we want to repeat the Claim we have been making these days with every sense of commitment.

THAT GOVERNOR OKOROCHA’s achievements in Imo in the past Six years have exceeded or superceded all that those who governed the State before him put together had achieved. This is our innocent claim. And we want to be Challenged on this innocuous Claim or Contradicted. We have more than one thousand verifiable projects to the Credit of the People’s Governor, Owelle Okorocha. And Imo people celebrate him except the few vocal elite.

NOW THE ISSUES:
The newspaper scored the governor “Average” in education; Below Average in Agriculture; poor in Health care; poor in infrastructure; and Above average in security. And of all these scores, we could only accept or take delivery of that of Security, and also make hay to reject others because they were grossly wrong scores.

We therefore tell our success story to justify our Claims:-

(1) EDUCATION:

In education, Governor Okorocha should have been scored Excellent. And this Excellent we have subscribed to, is not for the fun of doing so, it is based on outstanding achievements or exploits in the area of education. Now read our lips and correctly too.
 Imo State under Governor Okorocha has been enjoying free and qualitative education from Primary to Secondary and from Secondary to tertiary level. And it has been a success story all along.
 Government has been supplying the students and pupils with free sandals, desks, lockers, chairs, uniform, stockings, etc.
 Government has employed about 11,000 teachers both regular and those under Youth Must Work programme to ensure that there are enough teachers for the schools.
 School enrolment in Imo has skyrocketed from 276,000 in 2011 to more than 850,000 in 2017 because of the free education programme.
 Imo has topped in JAMB EXAM APPLICATIONS for 6years now (from 2012 – 2017) and has shown excellence in every public exam. The records are there.
 Governor Okorocha has built new Universities and Schools like the Eastern Palm University, Ogboko; Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala University of Agriculture and Vetinary Medicine; Maritime University Oguta (now handed over to NAVY); College of Education Ihitte-Uboma; School of Health Okporo; Imo College of Advanced Professional Studies (ICAPS) Owerri; College of Technology Ehime Mbano; School of Nursing Umuowa; Young Scientist College Owerri; Imo Girls College Owerri; Owerri City College; Owerri City Primary School and others too numerous to mention. We have mentioned their locations for easy verification.
 He has also built 305 upstair primary school buildings with one in each of the 305 wards in the state.
 Remodeled and rebuilt all the premier schools left to dilapidate over the years by the previous administrations. They include, Government College Owerri, Government Technical College Owerri, Emmanuel College Owerri, Ikenegbu Girls College Owerri, Akwakuma Girls College, Comprehensive Secondary School Amakohia, Umuna Secondary School, Ngor Okpala Secondary School, Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo.
 Built Computerised Ultra-Modern Library.
 Increased monthly subventions of Imo State University, Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUTH) and Imo Polytechnic Umuagwo by 200percent.
 Introduced new dressing code for teachers in the state.
 Paid teachers’ salaries upto April, 2017.
 Built magnificent new structures at IMSU, IMSUTH and Imo Polytechnic Umuagwo. We have written to justify the EXCELLENT we gave to ourselves, and it is left for anybody or group to fault us.

(2) HEALTHCARE:

We claim ABOVE Average on the issue of Health Care. And these are our reasons:
 Governor Okorocha has built 27 ultra modern 200 bed hospitals of International Standard with one in each of the 27 LGAs, with some of them equipped and four of the hospitals handed over to the Navy, Airforce, Army and Police.
 Built a world class diagnostic and Medical Centre called Oshiedike with modern facilities.
 Renovated some of the Old General Hospitals in the state.
 Introduced functional and effective Health at Your Door programme.
 Built Imo Foundation that has assisted a lot of Imo people and even non-indigenes with complicated health issues to be treated outside the country.
 Ensured accreditation of courses at IMSUTH that warranted the graduation of students of the institution for the first time.
 Built theatre suites, Radiology wing housing MRI, CTSCAN and fluoroscope, Specialist Clinic, at IMSUTH. We are telling our story and would want to be challenged over these Claims.

(3) INFRASTRUCTURE:

Scoring Rochas Okorocha anything less than Excellent in the area of infrastructure could be adjudged the most uncharitable of the whole scores. Those who have been following reports from the state or those who have visited the state, would agree with us that if there is one area Rochas should be scored Super-Excellent, it is in the area of infrastructure:
 Governor Okorocha has to his credits more than 600 kilometres of urban roads and more than 1000 kilometres of rural roads. The list and locations of the roads are available to give to any group or establishment on demand.
 He has remodeled & rebuilt the Government House with befitting new structures including a new governor’s lodge, a new chapel, a new clinic, new twin story building for the Deputy Governor and first Lady’s Offices, Sam Mbakwe EXCO Chamber, Ndubuisi Kanu EXCO Chamber, Nick Banquet hall, Media building, Staff Canteen and all, inside the Government House.
 Built Imo International Convention Centre (IICC).
 Built two flyovers and three tunnels.
 Built Treasury House and Imo Trade & Investment Centre.
 Built Odenigbo guest house with nine apartments.
 Built four-floor ISOPADEC Complex headquarters.
 Built Ikemba Ojukwu Centre.
 Built Computer and Lounge for Civil Servants.
 Built Eze Imo Palace.
 Built CGC Office Complex.
 Made major roads in Owerri eight-lanes in his urban renewal programme.
 Built Imo Micro Finance Bank
 Built Cultural Centres in the three zones of the state.
 Renovated the State Secretariat and Computerised the Offices.
 Building New High Court Complex called Justice Oputa Complex.
 Reconstructed and remodeled Old Concord Hotel to a five-star hotel.
 Built New NYSC headquarters.
 Built twelve round-abouts within Owerri and environs.
 Built pedestrian bridges.
 Rebuilt all the Council headquarters.
 Built Chapels & ICT Centres in the LGA Headquarters.
 Built more than 270 bungalows for indigent women and widows through the wife’s Pet Project, SNARP.

(4) AGRICULTURE:

They also scored us below Average in Agriculture. We reject it intoto and quickly score ourselves ABOVE AVERAGE, on the basis of our achievements in that regard;
 Governor Okorocha introduced Ikuona nkwu in all the communities and the outcome has been remarkable.
 Reconstructed the fish farm in Oguta and the result has also been wonderful.
 Introduced rice farming in the state.
 Remodeled Avutu Poultry and Adapalm and made them productive.
 Introduced Poultry Farming in the 27 LGAs in the state.
 Remodeled Imo zoo.
 Introduced Back to land for Agriculture. And the attendant result is that with free education, the poverty level in the state has drastically gone down from 57% in 2011 to 14% in 2017, according to United Nation’s report.

(5) EASE OF DOING BUSINESS:

No CLARITY ON INVESTMENT DRIVE IN Imo, for which they scored the state “poor”. And since they didn’t explain what they meant by that, we approach it in our own way:
 The governor repurchased the Resin Paint Industry in Mbaise sold by those before him and handed it over to a Chinese Company SKYRUN now producing electrical gadgets at Nguru Mbaise.
 The Paper Packaging Industry at Owerre ebiri equally sold by those before him was also repurchased by Governor Okorocha and is today working.
 There is an industrial Park now in Owerri and artisan village.
 And because of the high level of security and infrastructural revolution in the state, investors have “invaded” the state and there is, at the moment, population explosion and business/investment evolution in the State.
To say the least, there is no aspect of governance, Rochas Okorocha does not deserve to be scored above average. Let anybody or organization with anything in the contrary challenge us on this harmless claim. We have done our own bit and it is now left for those behind the report in question to act well their own part.

Like we had earlier intoned, we hold THISDAY and its management team in high esteem and we would continue to do so not minding the report under scrutiny."

Sam Onwuemeodo
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor

The 30-year-old featured just three times for the Magpies this season, before leaving in February.

Tiote was also part of the Ivory Coast squad that won the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
His agent Emanuele Palladino said: "It is with deep sadness that I confirm that my client Cheick Tiote sadly passed away earlier today after collapsing in training with his club Beijing Enterprises.

"We cannot say any more at the moment and we request that his family's privacy be respected at this difficult time.
