Southampton have sacked manager Claude Puel after one season in charge. The 55-year-old Frenchman, who was appointed in June 2016, led Saints to eighth in the Premier League last season despite losing 16 games. They also reached the League Cup final, their first major final since 2003. A Southampton statement read: "The search for a new management team is under way. We are confident that we will find the right fit in line with the long-term vision of the club."

Puel spent four years as Manager of Nice before replacing Ronald Koeman, who led Southampton to sixth in the table in 2015-16. Southampton were beaten 3-2 by Manchester United in the League Cup final in February. They managed only one win in their final eight league matches of the season and scored one goal in the last six games. The club statement read: "Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year.

"The highlight of the season was a memorable day at Wembley in the EFL Cup final, a day our fans will always treasure." Puel is the third manager to leave Southampton in the past three years, following Mauricio Pochettino's departure for Tottenham and Koeman's move to Everton. The former Monaco boss was sacked exactly one year after Koeman departed on 14 June 2016. Puel was appointed on 30 June, 2016 and it is understood the Saints are looking at a similar time frame to name their next manager.

The club are believed to already have a shortlist in place, with the potential candidates each having a similar profile to the last three managers.

Premier League newcomers Huddersfield Town have agreed a club-record £10m fee for Manchester City's Australia midfielder Aaron Mooy. Mooy, 26, spent last season on loan at Huddersfield and played in their play-off final win over Reading, which secured them a place in the top flight.

It is thought the fee will be made up of an £8m initial payment, plus a further £2m in add-ons. There are also buy-back and sell-on clauses included in the deal. Mooy joined City from Australian club Melbourne City 12 months ago on a three-year contract.

He has not made a senior appearance for Pep Guardiola's side.

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather will meet UFC champion Conor McGregor in a fight that has been described as a "farce" and a "circus" but could earn both men as much as $100m (£78.4m). American Mayweather, 40, posted a video on Twitter confirming the bout will take place in Las Vegas on 26 August, with the message: "It's official." Irish UFC lightweight champion McGregor, 28, said: "The fight is on."

UFC president Dana White told ESPN: "The impossible deal is now done." The fight - at light-middleweight - will be one of the richest in boxing history. Mayweather, a former five-weight world champion and widely considered the best boxer of his generation, retired unbeaten in 2015 after 49 bouts. That followed a successful defence of his WBC and WBA welterweight titles, a victory that meant he equalled Rocky Marciano's career record of 49-0. Mayweather retired for the first time in 2008 after 39 fights.

McGregor, who has never boxed professionally, became the UFC's first dual-division champion in November 2016 and has previously challenged Mayweather to a fight under mixed martial arts rules. His boxing licence was granted by the California State Athletic Commission in December, allowing him to box in the US state.
