Worried by the spate of jungle justice on suspected persons being recorded in recent times, the Lagos State Police Command on Friday, warned residents to desist from engaging in such act, as it violates the laws of the land and also dents the image of the State. The State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, who gave the warning in a statement, said that as much as there was no legal justification for jungle justice, in most cases, vital evidence that could aid the Police in the course of the investigation were destroyed.

Owoseni listed recent cases to include the incident of August 8, 2017, at Ajala Bus-Stop, Ijaiye-Ojokoro, where two persons suspected to be kidnappers/ritualists were completely burnt, while some buildings were vandalised. He also referred to the incident of August 10, 2017, at Ile-Zik Bus Stop, along Old Lago-Abeokuta Road, where a mob attempted to carry out a jungle justice on some destitute, suspected to be ritualists/kidnappers but were prevented by the quick intervention of the Police and other sister security agencies.

Owoseni also expressed concern on the attack of police officers, who in the course of trying to prevent such incidents are physically assaulted and injured, warning that those found taking laws into their hands would be arrested and duly prosecuted.

The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Friday said history had taught him that the failure of the nation’s justice system to respond adequately to crisis is a major factor leading to greater conflict. Osinbajo said this while inaugurating a Presidential Investigation Panel to Review the Compliance of the Armed Forces with Human Rights Obligations and Rules of Engagement at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said it was a known fact that the conduct of the nation’s defence and security forces during the insurgency in the North East and militancy in the Niger Delta had in recent times attracted significant commendation. He recalled that at the inception of the present administration, seven local government areas were under the control of Boko Haram while virtually all of them have now been recovered by security forces. He also noted that the Armed Forces have fought against militants in other areas of the country; in some cases to protect critical national infrastructure and natural resources.

The Acting President said the nature of asymmetric or unconventional warfare that they have had to contend with presented unique challenges that most modern armies are ill-equipped to tackle with conventional warfare tactics.

The Department of State Services (DSS) on Friday announced its busting of more kidnappers and Boko Haram militants’ cells in some parts of the country. The Spokesman for the agency, Tony Opuiyo, said the first kidnap gang of seven was busted on July 3  at Kakuri Industrial Area of  Kaduna State followed by the arrest of  two members of another gang 24 hours later.

The arrested members of the first gang are – Haliru Hassan ,Usman Abdulkadir, Yusuf Saidu, Abubakar Shuiabu, Abukakar Suleman, Uzairu Bawa, and Sani Abubakar, said to have been terrorising motorists and commuters within the Rijana and Katari axis of the Abuja-Kaduna Highway.

The second gang, according to the DSS, is led by   Rabiu Sani aka Dogo and his close associate, Abubakar Sani.

The Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered that a $37.5m mansion on Banana Island, Lagos linked to a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government. The orders were made on Monday by Justice Chuka Obiozor, following a motion on notice argued before him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The anti-graft agency had on July 19, 2017 obtained a court order to temporarily seize the property designated as Building 3, Block B, Bella Vista Plot 1, Zone N, Federal Government Layout, Banana Island Foreshore Estate, which is said to have 24 apartments, 18 flats and six penthouses.

The court had directed that the temporary forfeiture order be published in a newspaper and then adjourned till Monday for anyone interested in the property and funds to appear to convince the court why they should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.

One person was injured on Tuesday in Abuja when policemen fired tear gas canisters at protesters demanding the return of President Muhammadu Buhari who had been on medical leave in London, United Kingdom since May 2017. The wounded citizen was taken to a clinic at the Federal Secretariat complex, a few kilometres from the scene of the incident. But the extent of his injuries could not be immediately ascertained.

The coalition members were having their sit-out at the Millennium park opposite the Unity Fountain, Maitama, Abuja when the armed policemen fired tear gas canisters to disperse them. The participants, however, braved the assault and continued with their meeting for about an hour.

The protesters who are members of about four civil society organizations were demanding that Buhari should return to the country or resign if he was incapacitated.
