I watched with rapt attention, at times bemusement and occasionally sheer disbelief as the Ward, LGA and State Congresses of the APC unfolded. Of course there were pockets of issues of varying degrees and nature across the country.

At the time, I made a submission calling the attention of Party members and particularly calling on the Chief Oyegun-led EXCO and the National Working Committee to ensure that issues arising from the Congresses were handled with fairness and objectivity in the interest of the Party in particular and the Nation’s Democracy at large.

However events in the last couple of days makes one wonder if the HE Chief John Odigie Oyegun’s led APC's NWC may have other plans than setting the party on a solid, peaceful, united and democratic footing. One wonders why.
There’s no doubt that Chief Oyegun has had a running battle with some other leaders of the Party, conspicuously those who towed the line of not extending the tenure of the EXCO.

Furthermore the obvious preference for his kinsman, Comrade Adams Oshiohole by majority of progressive members of the Party, including my humble self, who want the party to return to its true ideology and vibrancy, seemed to have unsettled the Chairman. Inevitably on Friday, 1st of June 2018, Chief Oyegun finally declared what many informed watchers had known all along that he will not seek re-election.
However one cannot help but wonder if Chief Oyegun is on a mission – a vendetta mission of sorts against the Party and certain individuals in the party.

Just today, the State EXCOs of the Party were inaugurated at the National Secretariat of the Party. These were products of Ward, LGA and State Congresses held in the last few weeks. This is good news of course. However, curiously amongst those inaugurated were supposedly elected officials from Imo and Abia States.

One might ask; What is curious about that? Well it happens to be that in a Memo dated 1st of June 2018, and addressed to the National Chairman of the APC, titled “ABIA AND IMO STATE WARD, LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND STATE CONGRESSES.
NEED TO STAY ACTION PENDING THE DETERMINATION OF ALL LAW SUITS", the National Legal Adviser of the Party, Dr Muiz Banire (SAN), advised the National Chairman and the Party to stay action on those two Congresses pending the resolution of outstanding legal issues, one way or the other. He noted that “any action on these Congresses will amount to contempt of Court”.

Obviously the NWC in its wisdom chose to ignore the advice of the National Legal Adviser in this respect. No doubt the Chairman is not under any compulsion to accept the learned Counsel’s advice but it further raises the questions;
What is Chief Oyegun’s interest?
Are Chief Oyegun and his EXCO on a vendetta mission and that at the expense of the Party?

It is important to state at this juncture without taking sides one way or the other and without prevarication, from an objective Party man, Patriot and democrats’ perspective, that the Congresses purportedly held particularly in Imo State were undeniably fraught with so many controversies that played out before the public's eye, leading to the widely held belief that no Congresses (in the true sense of the word) held in the State.

Some people have described what happened in Imo State as a 'Civilian Coup-de-tat', even if it might enjoy some support based on emotions and sentiments from a particular group of people/Camp within and outside the party and within and outside the State.

This is so much so that many objective and unbiased members of the Party are of the sincere view that in order to promote unity, harmony, peace, progress and democratic ethos within the Party, the entire Congress process in Imo State should be cancelled and a fresh, credible and transparent process initiated where the shenanigans witnessed the last time would be avoided.
This they argue would definitely help to strengthen the Party in the State and shore up the Party's chances in the 2019 elections bearing in mind the incontrovertible fact that Imo State remains a strong enclave of the PDP and anti-APC sentiments are still very much palpable.

I know some people will jump at me for saying this but i'm not out to impress anyone. Simply to please my conscience. The fact remains that Democracy and internal Party Politics cannot be about sentiments and emotions. I know there are intrigues in politics and the power game but outright brigandage cannot be condoned because of its obvious destructive consequences. If we jettison true democratic processes and people (on all sides) take undue advantage of their liberties and positions to bequeath themselves undue advantages, we cannot grow our democracy.

It does not matter what interests I might have or seek to protect, the common interest should always come first. Two wrongs they say do not make a right. There is no good way of doing a bad thing just like impunity cannot cure impunity. We are called to uphold truth, equity and justice at all times.

It's time for all true democrats and APC members inspite of their allegiance to weigh in to forestall entrenching a bad precedence that will not augur well for the Party going forward. That's what real change is all about.

I can go a bit further but I’m consoled by the fact that the days of Chief John Oyegun as APC National Chairman are numbered and in a matter of days, true progressives shall retake the Party and hopefully some of these shenanigans will either be decisively redressed by the Party or the Courts will come to the rescue.

I only hope and pray that Chief Oyegun and co do not create more problems for the Party that would distract it from continuing delivering the dividends of the Democracy to Nigerians and inadvertently hurt the Party's fortunes in the 2019 elections.

God bless Nigeria.

...SAYS My AMBITION IS DIVINE

The Chief of Staff to the Imo State Governor, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, has described as unfounded and baseless, reports that he has suspended his governorship ambition over the opposition mounted by the 'Coalition Group'.

Nwosu stated that rather, his ambition has been strengthened by the activities of the opposition, which he affirmed has prepared him for the task ahead, stressing that cheap blackmail and propaganda can’t stop his ambition.

The Chief of Staff and former Commissioner for Lands,  who was reacting to a publication in one of the national newspapers that he may have jettisoned his push for the Imo State governorship, following the outcome of the party’s congresses, confirmed that his support base across the state has continued to swell by the day, which he said is rattling his opponents.

He maintained that he is not disturbed by the political intrigues and controversies that arose during the course of the contentious APC Congresses in the state, noting that his ambition is "divine and cannot be truncated by any man".

According to him, those behind the report of his purported withdrawal from the race are those who are already losing sleep over his growing acceptance among the Imo electorate, adding that, "no amount of cheap blackmail or sponsored falsehood in the media can distract him or derail God's plan for Imolites through his mandate".

He said, "there is nothing that can be farther from the truth than such report that I have suspended my ambition. It is those in the opposition that have suspended their governorship aspirations because of the fear of Ugwumba Uche Nwosu. They are afraid because they know that they don't stand a chance against the will of God and the people.

"We are very focused on the goal and we cannot be distracted. If you observe correctly, you will discover that we are not resting on our oars, we are moving and taking our message to the nooks and crannies of the state, while the so called Coalition Group are running around in hotels in Abuja looking for ways to subvert the will of the people, they are not on ground and none of them can win any election in Imo".

Nwosu who urged his supporters and the APC to disregard the malicious rumour, stated that what transpired during the botched APC Congresses in the state, has revealed the plans of the opposition parties to infiltrate the APC with the intention of introducing crisis that will mar the chances of the party during the 2019 election.

He said, "those same people who fought Governor Rochas Okorocha and even called him all sort of uncomplimentary names, some even went as far as selling the falsehood that he was working with President Muhammadu Buhari to Islamize the Southeast when he was building the APC, are the same people who are pretending to love the party.

We know their plans and their sponsors but just like we defeated them in 2011 and 2015, we will also defeat them in 2019 and President Muhammadu Buhari will have landslide victory in Imo and other Southeast states".

The Chief of Staff to the governor of Imo State, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, in this interview with CHIDIEBUBE OKEOMA (Punch Newspaper), speaks on the controversies surrounding the APC congresses in the state and the 2019 general elections.

Are you under any pressure to drop your governorship ambition because of the power play which characterised the All Progressives Congress’ congresses?

I am not under any kind of pressure to drop my governorship ambition. My aspiration is divine and God has approved that I will be the next governor of Imo State in 2019. The persons who gathered together under the auspices of Imo APC allied force are a group of people that we have been defeating since 2011. We will defeat them again in 2019. Their action only makes me become stronger and ready for the battle ahead. Their action has made me more determined, psychologically and otherwise to get sworn in as the next governor of Imo State. For me, there is no viable opposition against my ambition. It is about transferring power to the younger generation. What they are telling me, by their emergency alliance, is that my governorship ambition has been signed, sealed and delivered to me. Nothing good comes easy.  In politics, you don’t just get the power, you battle for it. Ifeanyi Araraume, Benjamin Uwajumogu, Jude Ejiogu, Osita Izunaso and Eze Madumere are fighting us as part of the political game which will come to an end when I, Uche Nwosu, am sworn in as the next governor of Imo State in 2019.

There are speculations that the cracks in the Imo APC will force the governor, you and your supporters to leave the party. Is it true?

There is nothing like that. Speculations are part of the game. The group of people fighting my governorship ambition will soon leave the APC, quote me. The truth is that you can’t talk about APC in Imo State and the entire South-East zone without talking about Governor Rochas Okorocha, who is the face of the APC in the South-East. The group of people making the empty noise today, mocked the governor in 2015 when he embraced the formation of the APC and threw his weight behind Muhammadu Buhari to become president. Many people, including Araraume, nicknamed the governor OkoroHausa in the Government House and went about the state lying that the governor was working towards Islamising Imo State by supporting the APC presidential candidate, a Fulani who is also a Muslim. Okorocha can’t go to another party, rather, those fighting us should go to another party or humble themselves if they want to remain in the party. Okorocha is one of the founding fathers of the APC in Nigeria. The party belongs to all of us because we are members of the party. We are ready for the battle ahead.

There are also speculations that the allied force asked the governor to drop you as his preferred successor if there must be harmony in the party. What is your reaction to this?

The allied force members should drop their governorship ambitions. They do not enjoy grass-roots support. It is about saying that you want be the next governor of Imo State. The key issue is, what do you have to offer our people? If my ambition to become the next governor is giving them a headache, they will have more headaches. My governorship ambition was ordained by God and there is nothing anybody can do about it because you can’t stop what God has approved. It is God that makes a king. Fighting my ambition is like fighting God and fire. Even the governor knows that the hand of God is in my governorship project.

What is your take on the claims that the governor is being humiliated in the APC because of his open endorsement of your governorship aspiration?

It is not true. The governor’s only crime in the APC is that he opposed the tenure elongation for the National Working Committee of the party. There are just two persons fighting the governor — the National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, and the National Organising Secretary, Osita Izunaso. It is not because of me or my governorship ambition but because the governor spoke in favour of the APC constitution and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. There is no tenure elongation in the constitution of the APC. The governor saw the future ahead and prevented the party from unnecessary legal battles and political accident after the candidates of the party would have emerged. For some members of the national working committee, who want to remain in power, the governor’s position was a bad omen for them. That is how and from where the conspiracy started. Okorocha, from the outset, did not have any issue with the national chairman. The cold war started after his position on tenure elongation. Izunaso should be grateful to Rochas Okorocha for making him the national organising secretary of the APC. We came from a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance to form the APC and we were asked to produce the national organising secretary of the party and that was how the governor nominated Izunaso who is today fighting him.

Are you not threatened by the kind of political gladiators who are opposing your governorship ambition?

Why should I be threatened? In 2011 and 2015, these people were not with us and the governor won convincingly. In every 12, there must be a Judas. We are not worried by the persons who think they have betrayed the governor by joining the opposition. In 2011, Senator Arthor Nzeribe, Ifeanyi Araraume, Ikedi Ohakim, Achike Udenwa, Kema Chikwe, Hope Uzodimma, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and all of them were not with us but the governor defeated a sitting governor. In 2015, again, we had a sitting president, who was the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Ikedi Ohakim, and Emeka Ihedioha, who was riding three superbikes, yet the governor was not intimidated and he won again. In Okorocha’s camp, not even the smallest person sees any of these people as a problem. We will win again.

Will you drop your governorship ambition if the governor directs you to do so?

Yes, I will because he is my leader. But I know the governor will not do that. My governorship project is a divine project. The man Rochas Okorocha is a man who believes in the efficacy of prayers. For the governor to have openly endorsed my candidature, it means that he has consulted his God very well. The issue of Okorocha asking me not to run for governor will not arise because that means he will go back to reverse what the people have done. Okorocha believes in God and the people. He will not direct me to drop the project because he knows that it is the best for the state. The governor knows that I will make a good governor. He will not reverse himself because he is a man of honour and integrity.

The National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie Oyegun has finally broken his prolonged silence on his future as the National Chairman of the APC, saying he has decided to step aside and not re-contest the position at the forth coming national, convention.

President Muhammadu Buhari had openly endorsed the immediate past governor of Edo State and Chief Oyegun’s kinsman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for the National chairmanship position.

He told newsmen Friday night at his residence that it was his personal conviction not to seek re-election, but will always be available to serve the party, adding that it was in the best interest of the party for him not to seek another term in office.
Oyegun said even though he had desired to re-contest the position he has decided that in the interest of the party, he will not be seeking reelection and has therefore decided to withdraw from the race.

He said “I have taken this decision without prejudice to my commitment to the party in helping to solve some of the subsisting and emerging difficult issues and my ability to continue to provide necessary leadership.

“However, I believe that the party faces difficult days ahead and all critical stakeholders in its leadership would be required to bind together for a common purpose. Therefore, the less contentious our national convention is the better for the party.

“I have always sought to be part of solving the problem of APC. I do not intend to be part of the problems for APC to solve. It is for this reason I hereby declare that I will not be seeking re-election as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“However, I will continue to perform my functions as the National Chairman of the party till my tenure officially ends on Monday the 25th of June when. New set of party executives will be inaugurated.”

Oyegun said the decision to have the present Executive remain in office in an interim capacity was to avoid going into the 2019 elections as a divided house, saying “with the 2019 general elections looming on the horizon, some of us consider it to be in the best interest of the party to go into the elections as a united fighting force, rather than one that was potentially weakened by internal conflict arising from competitive congresses.

“It was for this reason that we canvassed and obtained the NEC decision of February 27 asking all executives of the party to continue in office in acting capacity for another period of twelve months.”

He said that it was within his constitutional right to seek another term in office, believing that his experience and familiarity with some of the most important issues that must be at the top of the political agenda which put him in the best position to lead the party into another election.

He acknowledged the fact the even without declaring his interest to seek another term, several top stakeholders of the party at all levels began to rally round him, saying “I believe that these loyal party men and women instinctively choose to support me, because they recognized what was in the best interest of the party at that point in time.

“Quite fundamentally, they were demonstrating their love and commitment for the party, realizing that perhaps, what was needed most at this point in time in our history as a political party is experience and stability.

“We have conducted the congresses in all the 36 states and the FCT, we have set a date for the national convention. Now that the convention committee has invited interested aspirants to obtain forms to contest into the various national positions, it has become necessary for me to state my position.

“I have consulted widely with my family, friends and associates. Even though i had the desire to re-contest as the National Chairman of the party, I have decided that it is ultimately in the best interest of the party for me to withdraw from the race.”
