Fourteen political parties, excluding main opposition parties, Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Grand Alliance , are ready for the local government elections taking place in Imo State on Saturday.

Some of the participating political parties include the ruling All Progressives Congress , Accord Party , Green Party of Nigeria , Young People ’s Party , KOWA , Mega Party of Nigeria , Social Democratic Party , African Democratic Congress .

The Chairman of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission , Ethelbert Ibebuchi , who briefed journalists on level of preparedness of the commission ahead of the polls , promised an equal playing ground .

According to the electoral umpire ’s chairman , the political parties would be vying for 27 chairmanship positions and 645 councillorship positions .

He said , “The commission is ready for the Saturday election and we are urging the people to come out and perform their civic responsibilities . Let me assure all and sundry that ISIEC has made available to all participating political parties and their candidates a level playing ground to actively take part in order to actualise their political goals . ”

“May I in unequivocal terms assure our numerous publics that ISIEC is sufficiently ready to go. Rest assured that as part of our altruistic design to ensure a hitch free exercise , there shall be restriction of movement of persons between 8 am and 4 pm when polls are expected to come to an end ”.

PDP and APGA said they won’t be participating in the election .
But the ISIEC chairman said that the development would not affect the credibility of the process.

No fewer than 25 women suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra being detained in the Owerri federal prison facility have been moved out of the town .

A source in the prison confided in our correspondent on Thursday that the women were moved out to Okigwe prison on Wednesday and Thursday , respectively.

He said the development became necessary following the congestion of the female cells in the Owerri federal prison .

The source said the 548-capacity prison had 2, 253 inmates because of the presence of the 127 IPOB women and 74 suspected cultists.

He said, “ The Owerri prison authority has transferred 25 IPOB women to Okigwe prison . Ten were taken to Okigwe prison on Wednesday.

We are having space problem . The female cells are filled to capacity . There are no places they can stay.

The authority has to move them to another nearby prison .”

The Public Relations Officer of the Owerri Federal Prison , James Madugba , who confirmed the development in a telephone conversation with our correspondent, said that only 10 IPOB women were transferred to Okigwe prison as of Wednesday.

The prison spokesperson said the reason for the transfer of the women was to guarantee their safety and welfare.

He acknowledged that the prison facility was congested and that the female cells were pressured because of the number of female inmates in custody .


Meanwhile, 15 more women suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra were on Thursday remanded in the Owerri federal prison by a magistrate ’s court in Owerri presided over by S.K Kadurumba .

The development has increased the number of IPOB women remanded in custody by the court to 127 in the last four days .

Arraigning the fifteen women, the police prosecutor , Caleb Achi , told the court that the women committed the same crime the other 112 earlier remanded by the same court committed .

Achi explained that the accused were not arraigned the same day the others were arraigned because of exigencies.

He explained that while two women who slumped before their arraignment on Monday were rushed to the hospital for resuscitation and their names removed from the charge sheet , the other 13 w
ere not brought to court earlier because the unit of the police handling their matter was not ready .


The police prosecutor gave the names of the women as Chinyere Ubani , Precious Anyanwu , Nwaka John , Nwadike Chinyere , Chika Uruagwu, Ifeanyi Florence, Chinedu Chibuzo and Cynthia Okoroagwu .

Others are Paulina Iroanya Ntizi Josephine , Blessing Nwelele, Chinyere Achonna, Nneka Okoro , Magrate Eze and Ijeoma Nwafor .

Some of the charges read, “That you conspired with others now at large to commit misdemeanor to wit; conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 517 of the Criminal Code .. 


“ That you and others now at large did in a public place , conduct yourselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by unlawfully obstructing the flow of traffic and other business and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 249 (d ) of the Criminal Code Act .

“ That you did assemble yourselves together and publicly exhibited banners , emblems , flags or symbols of Indigenous people of Biafra and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 88 ( b ) of the Criminal Code .”

There was drama in Owerri , the Imo state capital , on Friday when operatives of the state police command intercepted a convoy carrying the corpse of a 39 - year -old man, Kingsley Egwim, home for funeral rites.

The convoy, which was conveying the corpse from Rivers State to Amauziri in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, was accosted at Tetlow by Bank Raod in Owerri by cops who were on a stop- and- search duty.
On being searched, a pistol with some live bullets was discovered in one of the buses in the convoy.

Upon the discovery, the police arrested the corpse and the mourners and marched them to the state police command headquarters.

The development attracted residents, who trooped out to watch the drama. A police source told Ameborave that the testimony of one of the arrested persons made the operatives to force open the casket, leading to the discovery of a pistol with police insignia.

The source said, “While on a stop-and-search duty, the operatives of the command intercepted a convoy conveying a corpse home.

“Their attire and disposition raised the curiosity of the men and we quickly flagged them down. While their vehicles were ransacked, a pistol and bullets were recovered.
“We quickly marched them to the state command headquarters , where we forcefully opened the casket and found a pistol with police insignia on it. The pistol was with the corpse inside the casket.

“From preliminary investigation, the youths, numbering 72 – both male and female – are members of a cult group from Rivers State, who were possibly attending the funeral of one of their members.

“ What a pistol was doing inside a casket is what we do not understand. The pistol has police insignia , meaning that they might have killed a police officer and took his pistol or they stole it from policemen after attacking them.”

When our correspondent visited the command headquarters, the suspected cultists were seen being interrogated by operatives of the command.

Another source told our correspondent that the tattoos and knives cults on the bodies of the suspects indicated that they were dreaded cultists.

Ameborave.com gathered that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Dansuki Galandanchi, ordered the release of the corpse around 4 pm for funeral rites when the widow and father of the deceased came to the police command to identify the deceased.

Our correspondent saw some relatives of the deceased carrying the casket out of the command headquarters while police impounded the ambulance and other vehicles the suspects were arrested in.

The wife of the dead and her father were seen walking behind those carrying the casket out from the police premises.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, said two pistols, one with police insignia, and 44 rounds of live ammunition, were recovered from the suspects.
Enwerem, who said the arrest was as a result of the community policing strategy of the CP, gave the assurance that the suspects would be charged to court at the end of investigation.

Suffering from corruption stigma placed on it, the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to change its name, a rebranding measure ahead of 2019 general election.

ThisDay reported that the party had suffered a string of losses in the last four governorship elections – Edo, Ondo, Anambra and Ekiti.
The newspaper reported that the decision of the party for a change of name was taken on Saturday night.

The party noted that the move was pre-emptive to prevent the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from tagging it as corrupt. PDP, which planned to announce the decision to change its name, had also pencilled down Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu as the one to head a committee that would walk the party through the procedure.

Many of the party’s stalwarts have been worried by how the ruling APC had successfully branded the party as corrupt in the eyes of Nigerians and admitted that, a rebranding was imperative to mount a successful challenge in 2019.

PDP had become damaged goods that must be changed to give the party a fresh start.
The decision by the PDP to change its name might have stemmed from last Thursday’s meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Though, details of their discussion were not made public, many in PDP believed that with such sessions, the chances of bringing Saraki back to the PDP could be hampered. The opposition party had long mooted the idea of name change, but had slowed down on the decision because a majority of its members were not disposed to it, and those who wanted it could not convince the others.

Besides, it was thought that even though the party had switched positions and had become an opposition party, PDP was still the only party with membership in the remotest parts of the country, and the name resonated with a majority of its members and admirers, particularly among the teeming illiterate populations.

Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), says Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue state, was not pushed out of the party.

He said this on Monday at the party secretariat in Abuja while responding to questions on the withdrawal of Ortom.

Ortom had announced that APC had given him a “red card” and this would enable him to join any political party that has an ideology worthy of being adopted by his administration.

But the party chairman said he could not comment on the basis of rumour, saying APC would dig into the matter and react accordingly.

“This party will not comment on the basis of rumours and I am sure eventually we will find out the fact of the matter and base on those facts, we would act,” he said.

“I know that Ortom is a prominent member of the party. He has said repeatedly to me one on one that he will not leave the APC unless he was pushed out.

“I have since assumed the chairmanship of this party along with my brothers and sisters in the national working committee and I know that we have not shut out any governor, certainly not Ortom.”
