Leader of the 'proscribed' Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, on Wednesday, told the Federal High Court, Abuja, that he had been a fan of Liverpool Football Club from childhood.

According to the News Agency Of Nigeria, Kanu disclosed this when his lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, complained that the Department of State Services had not been allowing him and other counsel enough time to meet with the IPOB leader whenever they visited him in detention.

After addressing his concern, Nyako jokingly mentioned that she was a fan of Liverpool and asked Ozekhome which club was his favourite. Ozekhome replied that he was also a Liverpool fan.

Nyako then asked Kanu if he was a fan of Chelsea Football Club given his penchant for the designer outfit he kept wearing to court.

Kanu responded, “My team is Liverpool even from age of seven.”

The judge then told the DSS legal director who was in court to allow Kanu to watch the matches of his favourite football club.

Meanwhile, the judge observed that Kanu had continued to show up in court in the same attire despite her order for him to change clothes.

The authorities of the Federal High Court in Abuja have soft-pedaled on the stringent conditions imposed on the trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

Against their last month decision, the court authorities have stopped the movement of the trial to the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, at Jabi District of Abuja.

Also, the authorities of the Court have permitted the media to witness the treasonable felony charges brought against the Biafra nation agitator by the Federal Government.

At the time of this report, fully armed operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, have taken perfect control of the security situations within and outside the court premises.

Journalists, lawyers, litigants, as well as workers are being allowed into the court premises unhindered after formal introduction and presentation of identity cards.

The court had last month issued a Practice Direction which moved the trial to CCT believed to be large and spacious enough to accommodate the crowd that usually surged to witness the trial.

The Practice Direction endorsed by the Chief Judge of the Court, Justice John Tsoho had also prohibited media coverage except where expressly permitted.

It’s observed that the stringent conditions have been jettisoned.

Although, reasons for deviating from the Practice Direction have not been made known, it was gathered that Jabi Code of Conduct Tribunal was considered too porous for such a sensitive trial, especially from the security points.

Apart from unhindered access being granted to lawyers and media practitioners, roads leading to the court are not blocked, while food vendors are also having their businesses done without molestation.

However, adequate security measures are being observed to prevent security breaches.

According to the source, the husband and two others who last called the phone number of the victim were arrested on Saturday, April 30.

He revealed that the suspects are with the homicide section of FCT Police Command as investigations continue.

More Revelations

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has paraded three suspects in connection with the murder of a female member of the National Youths Service Corps, Stephanie Terungwa.

The Command’s Commissioner, CP Sunday Babaji, confirmed the development when he spoke with newsmen on Monday.

Babaji said the Maitama Division of the Command had on April 15, 2022 received information about the body of a middle-aged lady lying on the road.

Babaji said that Crime Scene Investigators were swiftly drafted upon the receipt of the information and removed the body to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead by a doctor on duty.

Their initial effort to facially profile the victim proved abortive due to her deformed face suspected to have resulted from exposure to a corrosive substance.

The CP said that discrete investigation revealed that the deceased was Terungwa, a 26-year-old Corps member who resides in City Homes Estate, Lokogoma with one Edward Achadu.

It was discovered that she left home with her one-year and five-months-old son on April 14 and never returned home.

Babaji said: “A day later, the son was recovered at Holy Trinity Catholic Church upon a call placed through to one of the paternal relatives.

“Discrete and painstaking Investigations by Tactical and Intelligence assets of the Command attached to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigations Department led to the arrest of three suspects.”

He said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion the investigation.

The female suspect told newsmen that the deceased only came to her house to collect phone the day she was found dead and denied any involvement in the act.

She said the male suspects were the ones that told her that they wanted to kidnap the deceased to demand for ransom.

However, another suspect, who said he was a colleague of the female suspect, told newsmen that she invited him to help her scare the deceased from her man.

He said the only role he played was to open the gate for the late Corps member when she came to Temba’s house.

He claimed that he met two other men who tied the deceased before he departed from the premises, adding that he later heard of the murder of the deceased.

Another male suspect said he was contracted by the female suspect to help her scare the deceased alongside his friend currently at large.

We can boldly say that now, more than ever, the population of children and youths have risen and with it raises the risk that faces them (especially those in Africa). This is because of the factors which hinder their development, poverty being a major one. Therefore, there is a need for putting the children and youths at the forefront of our discussion as most of them are not from financially stable homes capable of providing quality education for them as they will determine the quality of the society’s future.

Birthed from the desire to give every child a chance at a better future, the Rochas Foundation started as a family affair in Owerri, with cook-outs, gifting the less privileged, going to churches and mosques with welfare packages.

With its headquarters in Owerri, Imo state, the Rochas Foundation was Established in 1998 and so far, has trained 25,000 children, 6000 graduates, some of who are now in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Google. It has been 24 years of providing free and quality education to the less privileged children in society, giving them a level playing ground with their privileged peers.

The vision includes alleviating the plight of handicapped and less privileged children through free and comprehensive secondary school education and also accommodation for poor children, thereby giving hope to the hopeless and sensitizing the populace on several health issues like HIV/AIDS prevention and quality living.

The Foundation is not peculiar to a certain zone in Nigeria, as it has colleges in Owerri, Sokoto, Ibadan, Cross River, Enugu, Owerri, Kano, Yola, Zaria, Jos, to name a few. The gesture was also expanded to 55 African countries, and indigent children were randomly selected and given free education up to the university level.

It will be recalled that the Olu of Ibadan, His Royal Majesty Akanmu Adetunji (Aje Ogungunniso) of Ibadan, and the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) honored him with the award of “ Outstanding friend of Ibadan land in recognition of his contribution to the education of indigent children through his free education policy and establishment of tuition free schools in Ibadan, Oyo state. 6000 children from Oyo states and other Southwest states have benefited from his free education program the award caps the grand finale of the 2021 Ibadan cultural Festival Celebration at the liberty stadium.

In his words, “we in Ibadan have decided to celebrate you now and outside your territory so as to show that a burden has created a deserved permanent place for you in her territory. You are most deserving of this honor by virtue of this establishment. This unique youth empowerment legacy of yours we remain indelible in our minds till eternity. It is also a testimony to the fact that you have what it takes to reposition our great country.”

As he received the award, he also stated that measures had to be put in place to eradicate poverty. According to him, it wasn’t borne out of the desire to flagrantly display wealth but to a covenant with God Almighty and urged collective efforts for a better future for out youth and children.

The Foundation is funded by his various sets of businesses ranging from real estate to hospitality. Not all heroes wear capes. Some give children and youths a better future.

“If there’s anything we can do in our time to help humanity, let us do it now for we might not pass this way again”. - Rochas Okorocha

The Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, has dismissed allegations made against him by the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole. Oshiomhole had accused Governor Fayemi who is a presidential aspirant in the APC of asking him (Oshiomhole) to rig an election in his favour.

But Governor Fayemi, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, rubbished the allegation. The statement read in part, “The allegation, which was made on national television, is not only false, puerile and laughable, it is a figment of the imagination of the former APC Chairman as Governor Fayemi has never asked Oshiomhole to rig an election for him or any other person and never had any reason to ask for such.

“Members of the public are therefore urged to disregard the allegations by Comrade Oshiomhole, who apparently is still experiencing a post-traumatic stress disorder on account of his removal as Chairman of APC.” Stressing that he had no reason to approach Oshiomhole for favours for any election, the statement said “Governor Fayemi has a stellar track record of being a consummate democrat even in difficult times”.

“Many Nigerians can easily recall his historic concession speech in 2014 in an election that was clearly lost to electoral sleight of hand at the behest of the then People’s Democratic Party (PDP)–led Federal Government,” the statement added.
