ORLU CHORO ONYE MA UZO!

By New Nigeria Team

We can boldly say that now, more than ever, the population of children and youths have risen and with it raises the risk that faces them (especially those in Africa). This is because of the factors which hinder their development, poverty being a major one. Therefore, there is a need for putting the children and youths at the forefront of our discussion as most of them are not from financially stable homes capable of providing quality education for them as they will determine the quality of the society’s future.

Birthed from the desire to give every child a chance at a better future, the Rochas Foundation started as a family affair in Owerri, with cook-outs, gifting the less privileged, going to churches and mosques with welfare packages.

With its headquarters in Owerri, Imo state, the Rochas Foundation was Established in 1998 and so far, has trained 25,000 children, 6000 graduates, some of who are now in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Google. It has been 24 years of providing free and quality education to the less privileged children in society, giving them a level playing ground with their privileged peers.

The vision includes alleviating the plight of handicapped and less privileged children through free and comprehensive secondary school education and also accommodation for poor children, thereby giving hope to the hopeless and sensitizing the populace on several health issues like HIV/AIDS prevention and quality living.

The Foundation is not peculiar to a certain zone in Nigeria, as it has colleges in Owerri, Sokoto, Ibadan, Cross River, Enugu, Owerri, Kano, Yola, Zaria, Jos, to name a few. The gesture was also expanded to 55 African countries, and indigent children were randomly selected and given free education up to the university level.

It will be recalled that the Olu of Ibadan, His Royal Majesty Akanmu Adetunji (Aje Ogungunniso) of Ibadan, and the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) honored him with the award of “ Outstanding friend of Ibadan land in recognition of his contribution to the education of indigent children through his free education policy and establishment of tuition free schools in Ibadan, Oyo state. 6000 children from Oyo states and other Southwest states have benefited from his free education program the award caps the grand finale of the 2021 Ibadan cultural Festival Celebration at the liberty stadium.

In his words, “we in Ibadan have decided to celebrate you now and outside your territory so as to show that a burden has created a deserved permanent place for you in her territory. You are most deserving of this honor by virtue of this establishment. This unique youth empowerment legacy of yours we remain indelible in our minds till eternity. It is also a testimony to the fact that you have what it takes to reposition our great country.”

As he received the award, he also stated that measures had to be put in place to eradicate poverty. According to him, it wasn’t borne out of the desire to flagrantly display wealth but to a covenant with God Almighty and urged collective efforts for a better future for out youth and children.

The Foundation is funded by his various sets of businesses ranging from real estate to hospitality. Not all heroes wear capes. Some give children and youths a better future.

“If there’s anything we can do in our time to help humanity, let us do it now for we might not pass this way again”. - Rochas Okorocha

President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to consider the plight of students and call off its ongoing strike. He made the appeal at the 19th National productivity day and conferment of the National Productivity Order of Merit award held on Thursday.

The President equally urged students in public tertiary institutions to exercise patience as the Federal Government is striving to address the nagging issues in the nation’s university system within the ambit of available resources. Buhari’s appeal came two days after the union extended its industrial action, accusing the government of unwillingness to address its demands.

During Thursday’s event at the State House, President Buhari conferred the 2019/2020 awards on 37 individuals and 11 organizations. So far, three-hundred and eighty-two individuals and 97 organizations have been awarded since the ceremony began in February 1991.

Among the awardees is the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu, who was honoured for his role in advancing agriculture in the country; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, for his role in the war against COVID; Doctor Chikwe Iheakweazu, former Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

A presidential aspirant, Emeka Nwajiuba, has resigned his appointment as the Minister of State for Education. Nwajiuba, who is seeking to run for president on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), resigned from office on Wednesday in Abuja.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, confirmed the minister’s resignation. The announcement comes a few hours after President Muhammadu Buhari ordered members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) seeking to vie for any elective position to drop their appointment.

President Buhari had issued the directive while presiding over the weekly FEC meeting at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This directive, however, excludes the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, because he is an elected member of the cabinet.

Ministers affected Rotimi Amaechi (Transportation), Godswill Akpabio (Niger Delta Affairs), Chris Ngige (Labour and Employment), Ogbonnaya Onu (Science, Technology, and Innovation), Emeka Nwajiuba (Education – State), and Timipre Sylva (Petroleum Resources – State. All of these ministers are presidential aspirants and have bought the nomination and expression of interest forms of the ruling APC.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has extended the ongoing strike by twelve weeks, the president of the union, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke said on Monday.

In a statement he issued after an emergency National Executive Committee meeting of the association at the University of Abuja on Sunday, the ASUU president said the decision was to give the government enough time to resolve all outstanding issues with the lecturers.

“After extensive deliberations, noting the Government’s failure to live up to its responsibilities and speedily address all the issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action (MoA) within the additional eight-week roll–over strike period declared on 14th March 2022, NEC resolved that the strike be rolled over for twelve weeks to give Government more time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues,” the ASUU president’s statement read.

“The roll-over strike action is with effect from 12.01a.m. on Monday, 9th May 2022.”

An elder statesman and senior lawyer, Robert Clarke, SAN, Monday in Abuja, said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), should serve for an extra six months to give him enough time to address the country’s security woes.

Clarke stated that with less than a year to the 2023 elections there was not enough time to address the insecurity to ensure a safe exercise.

Speaking on Arise Television programme, he noted that the Constitution provided the President to extend his tenure for six months in the first instance if conditions were not ripe for an election.

He, however, warned that the nation may not scale through 2023 if nothing was done before the elections.

“The Constitution provides that the President can stay longer than eight years. I’ve always said it. It is in the Constitution. If the situation in which we’re in now continues, and it is impossible to vote in the 2023 elections, the Constitution says if a situation persists, the President can stay. Given all insurgencies, kidnappings, and Boko Haram, I don’t think in these areas of Nigeria, we can have a good election.

“So, the fact that the Constitution says the president cannot stay for more than eight years is wrong. Because the same constitution says he can be given six months if those conditions persist.

“Now, I don’t see any green light. I don’t see how what is happening today can be stopped within six months from today or before February next year when the elections will be held.

A 40-year-old broadcaster, Uche Igwe, who allegedly shared on Twitter, a video of a 10-year- old Chrisland School student, who engaged in sexual intercourse, was Monday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Owerri based humanitarian, writer and activist, Mr. Paulcy Iwuala, will on Saturday, February 9, 2019, launch his literary work entitled, "The Life of Samdaddy in My Eyes".

A release by Iwuala, who is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Genius Eyes International Foundation and Living Tribute Ltd, puts the venue at Presidential Hotel, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Iwuala had last week made public the book which talks about the life of a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu (Samdaddy), who represents Imo East Senatorial District at the red chamber.

Announcing the literary output, the author said the book was in line with his Living Tribute project.

"In line with The Living Tribute Project which I initiated about two years ago to continually appraise and celebrate individuals, experts in various fields of human endeavour and leaders who are deserving of recognition, I had written about many people and celebrated them while they are still alive", he announced.

Iwuala in the statement revealed that he was inspired by the Senator's kindness and love for humanity.

The statement partly reads: "However, I felt that there was more to Sen. Samuel Anyanwu (Samdaddy), a charismatic and enchanting politician who is so loved and admired by many. Hence, I wrote and published this work. No one is perfect, not me , not you , not Sam Daddy. But I have chosen to write a few among the beautiful things I have seen in a man whom when you go close to, his love for humanity in just a short time can make you stand by him forever.

"Countless times he has been of help to the helpless. I wouldn't begin to say how immensely he supported and helped my NGO, even Internationally, how he built a house for a homeless family. Yet, he asked not to be mentioned on the project as he does not want his life of charity to be affiliated with his political life".

Mr Iwuala said his book criticised no one but expressed what love should be.

'The Life of Samdaddy in my Eyes is a book that criticised no one but taught me what love is and how he (SamDaddy) even in his world of mistakes is a man with a large heart, and immense deposit of love tucked in somewhere waiting always to be explored.

"The book does not project Samdaddy as perfect, actually no man is, but it looks into the many good things about one of Nigeria's finest lawmakers ever. Through this book, I gave honour to whom it is due", he noted.

The book launch is expected to attract media professionals, writers, business moguls, industrialists and top politicians.

The Transition Committee Chairman and the Executive Chairman hopeful of the good and packaged people of Orlu Local Government Area Hon. Obinna Onyeocha Onowu has extended his hands of fellowship with the Children on this year's occasion of Children's day.

Onowu described Children as gifts from God that must be guided to follow the right path so as to get the full positive potential from them. He eulogized the Children for the massive role they play in Nation building. He advised that Children be considered as critical stakeholders in Nation building considering their present status as Leaders of tomorrow.

He advised parents to train their children in the way of the Lord so that when they grow, they won't depart from that godly way that will benefit them, their immediate family and the society at large.

He equally advised the children to always obey their parents in all ramifications so as to receive the blessings therein. He quoted the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians chapter 6 from verse 1 to 3 which reads "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise: that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth."

-SAYS AFRICA CAN ONLY SECURE ITS FUTURE THROUGH EDUCATION

I didn’t hesitate because I understand the importance of education to our children and society at large”.

For her “The dream of the founder of Rochas Foundation is the dream of all great men from this continent but to the glory of God, Rochas has been able to fulfill this dream. He can now be linked to the PAN Africanist list with Kwame Nkruma, Julius Nyerere, Zik and so on, because of what he is doing for Africa and because he has joined the league of great men that worked for the Unity of Africa”.

According to her “An educated nation will obviously be transformed into a developed nation. These children will in a very short time be source of light to their different nations and Africa at large. Education as been offered in ROFOCA is the fastest means of developing the African nation”.

In her speech earlier, wife of Imo State Governor, Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha told the visiting First Lady that the wife of the nation’s President Hajia Aisha Buhari is the matron of the College and one of the driving forces behind the school and its rapid growth within the very short period of its establishment.

She is the matron of the school and one of the driving forces behind the institution. She helped in bringing the 5 children each from the 55 nations of Africa. She is excited to know that you are here to see how your children are faring”.

She added “Looking at your face, we have no doubt that you are satisfied. I thank you for the trust you have in us by releasing 5 indigent children to us to train as future leaders of our continent and we are hopeful that you will still send another five by the beginning of next session.”

For over 13,000 children beneficiaries of Rochas Foundation College - 24th of February, 1998 will forever be a date they will not forget all their life; a day that gave birth to the Rochas Foundation.
Rochas Foundation; is a non governmental organization that caters for the poorest of the poor in our society.
Formed in 1998, three years after its formation, Rochas foundation college came into existence which was given birth to see for the educational needs of the children of the members of our society who could not afford it to have access to education with no payment attached.

They are admitted freely under Rochas College of education situated in Owerri, Ibadan, Jos, Kano, Ogboko ( which has both primary and secondary school and is the hometown of the founder) which made up of the old Rochas Foundation College stock.
From the initial five kick off centres across the country, Rochas foundation college expanded to more states in the country to accommodate more indigent Nigerians in giving their lives meaning through free and qualitative education.
With the new free education centres which spreads across Sokoto, Zaria, Calabar, Enugu, Bauchi and Yola Rochas Foundation college has over 13,000 students nationwide in its academic population.

Out of the 13,000 of the total student population, 4,000 of them have been graduated from Rochas foundation college and out of the 4,000 that have left the college, 1,000 have graduated from the university while 3,000 are still undergraduates at various learning centres across the country and 9,000 more are still currently in the college.

Like every other academic graduands would do the graduates have formed an alumnus body known as Rochas Foundation old Boys Association (ROFOSA).
More like an insatiable quest to see that the children of the less privileges receives education like every other kid; Rochas Foundation is spreading it's goodwill and benevolent tentacles not only on across the nation but across the continent.
Thus, Rochas Foundation has now expanded outside the shores of the country to make Nigeria's neighboring countries and members of the African continent partake in the benevolence of Owelle Rochas Okorocha to 55 other African countries with 5 children in each of the 55 countries as inaugural beneficiaries for a start.

And here, Rochas Foundation College of Africa is born.
Rochas Foundation College of Africa is a project 55 : 5 : 55 maxim which dictates that every African kid deserves a right to free and qualitative education and will be unveiled on the 27th of September, 2017 in the Eastern heartland of Owerri the capital city of Imo state where Owelle Rochas Okorocha will mark his 55th birthday with each of the 5 children from 55 countries in Africa.

On 27th of this month; the Project55555 will be born with the inaugural 275 students of Rochas Foundation college of Africa storming Owerri together with the other 4,000 members of Rofosa for the 55th birthday celebration of their adopted father in whom they are well pleased, Owelle Dr. Rochas Anayo Okorocha OON for the celebration of their founder and president of Rochas Foundation who incidentally is the governor of Imo state and the chairman of the APC governor's forum, for giving their life a meaning through education with project55555.

It will be a time to give back to the fore bearer of project55555 by the students.
One man who has given scholarship as a private citizen to over 13,000 African children; giving hope to lives of the indigents in our soiciety and making them believe in themselves.
This is a feat no body born of a man has been able to achieve in the whole of Africa as a continent.
A celebration of African champion of free education.
