Oyetunji A Ojo has carefully listed the 72 licensed FM radio stations operating in Lagos state as of February 2025.

I am curious to know how they are all surviving in such a highly competitive market. How are the stations able to differentiate their content offerings to create a niche in the market to attract advertisers and listeners?

This is really a tough market to crack for new entrants. Some of the stations though may not be profit-oriented but serve as ‘political voice’ for the owners. Some are campus stations for students practices. Still, one has to be a miracle worker to survive in such a market especially with rising operating costs.

FM stations operating in Anambra state totalling over 30 are currently facing similar revenue and listenership pressures. New stations are opening shop daily, the latest being Udala 104.7FM based in Onitsha. How do they all cope?

The Nigeria Football Federation has expressed deep sorrow after it was confirmed that Christian Chukwuemeka Chukwu, who captained Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad and later coached the team, had died in his native city of Enugu on Saturday.

Nicknamed ‘Chairman’ because of his imposing presence and the authority he exuded just in front of the rearguard at both club (Enugu Rangers) and country, Christian Chukwu was overjoyed as he hoisted above his head the Unity Cup (the first time Nigeria would triumph in the continental championship) after receiving same from President Shehu Shagari at the National Stadium, Surulere on Saturday, 22nd March 1980.

General Secretary of Nigeria Football Federation, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, said: “We have lost a good and great man. Chukwu was the definition of a strong, dedicated and disciplined leader on and off the field. He was not nicknamed ‘Chairman’ for nothing. He embodied strength, vision and consistency.

“We pray that the Almighty will grant his soul eternal rest, and also grant the family and friends he has left behind, and Nigeria football’s fraternity the fortitude to bear this big loss.”

Chukwu was in the Nigeria senior team that won bronze medals at the 1976 and 1978 AFCON finals in Ethiopia and Ghana respectively, before leading the squad to glory on home soil in 1980. He was named Player of the Tournament.

Born on 4th January 1951, Chukwu coached his darling club, Enugu Rangers (he played for only one club in his career) and then coached the senior national team of Kenya, nicknamed the Harambee Stars. He was named Head Coach of the Super Eagles in 2002, and led the team to finish third at the 2004 AFCON finals in Tunisia.

His death comes exactly 20 days after the 45th anniversary of the 1980 AFCON triumph. Before him, other members of the squad that had passed on, are goalkeepers Best Ogedegbe and Moses Effiong, defenders Okechukwu Isima and Tunde Bamidele, midfielders Aloysius Atugbu and Mudashiru Lawal, and forward Martins Eyo.

Senator Ali Ndume has raised alarm over renewed Boko Haram attacks in Borno State, revealing that over 300 people, including 100 soldiers, have been killed in 252 incidents within six months.

Speaking in Abuja, Ndume said the security crisis prompted Governor Babagana Zulum to lead a delegation, including lawmakers, to meet with the military high command. He disclosed that three local governments—Gudumbari, Marte, and Abadam—are now under Boko Haram control.

Ndume stressed that despite being overstretched, the military has neutralized over 800 terrorists, but more support is urgently needed to contain the insurgency.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nigerian football icon, Christian “Chairman” Chukwu, describing his passing as a monumental loss to the nation.

Chukwu, aged 74, passed away on Saturday after a prolonged illness. Widely revered in Nigerian football history, Chukwu captained the Super Eagles to their historic first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1980 and later served as the team’s head coach.

In an official statement released by the NSC, Hon. Olopade hailed the late footballer as “a true icon, a leader of men, and a national hero.”

“Christian Chukwu was not just a footballer; he was a symbol of pride, discipline, and excellence,” Olopade said. “His leadership on and off the field inspired generations, and his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of millions of Nigeria.

In a retaliatory move, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Friday, led members of the party’s National Working Committee on a visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna State.

The visit took place hours after former vice president Atiku Abubakar led the People’s Democratic Party delegation on a courtesy call to the former president.

The delegation included former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai; former governor of Sokoto, Aminu Tambuwal, former governor of Imo State, Achike Udenwa; former governor of Benue, Gabriel Suswam; former governor of Adamawa, Jibrilla Bindow; former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and former Minister of Communications, Isa Pantami.

Speaking with reporters after the meeting, El-Rufai said the visit to the former president was not political and asked “adversaries” not to lose sleep.

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory added that the visit was for “unity and brotherhood”. The outcome of the APC NWC’s visit remains unknown; there have been speculations of disunity in the party, as some members of its members recently defected to the Social Democratic Party.
