..... Oyo, Niger through to semi final in men's event
Team Imo Women's Hockey team will have a mountain to climb in their quest to qualify for the semi final of the ongoing Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival tagged Gateway Games as they face Group A leaders and already qualified, Team Delta in the last group game on Saturday morning at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode.
Team Imo began the Hockey event with a 2-0 win over Team Nasarawa but were badly bruised 3-0 by Team Plateau in their second game.
The Eastern Heartland representatives must beat Team Delta and also hope that current second placed Team Plateau does not beat or only pick a draw against group's whipping team, Team Nasarawa in the second game that will start immediately thereafter.
Team Delta having beaten Team Nasarawa (4-0) and Team Plateau (1-0) are through to the semi final with a game to spare in the Women's event while Team Plateau followed in second spot with three points and better goals difference ahead of third place Team Imo who also have three points but with inferior goals difference.
In the Men's Hockey, Team Oyo beat Team Delta 2-0 to top Group A at the end of the group stage games on Friday in Ijebu Ode. The Pacesetter State ended the group stage with a perfect record four wins (12 points) and will face Team Lagos in the semi final on Sunday.
Team Lagos edged Team Rivers to the second ticket by goals difference in Group A despite the latter's 4-2 victory over hosts, Team Ogun also on Friday.
In the second semi final tie, impressive Team Kaduna that rounded off their group stage game with a 5-1 mauling of Team Yobe, will face Group A second placed Team Niger in the second semi final billed for Sunday. Team Niger finished second in Group A with 7 points and only eliminating Team Delta by better goals difference.
Team Kaduna topped Group B with 12 points while Team Lagos placed second with 7 points.
