...NSC DG Meets Governor Mbah, LOC Inauguration Set for Wednesday
Enugu State has kicked off preparations for the 23rd National Sports Festival, scheduled for 2026, with renewed energy and strategic planning as the Coal City prepares to host Nigeria’s biggest multi-sport event. On Tuesday, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, paid a working visit to Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, at the Government House. The visit marked a key milestone in early planning and coordination efforts between federal sports authorities and the host state.
Governor Mbah reiterated the state’s commitment to delivering a world-class festival, emphasizing that the event would be a platform to celebrate the nation’s sports talent, promote unity, and engage youth across the country. In a significant development, the governor approved the composition of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), which is scheduled to be formally inaugurated on Wednesday. The committee includes seasoned professionals with strong backgrounds in sports administration, youth development, and event management.
Speaking after the meeting, Hon. Olopade expressed optimism about the state’s preparedness. “The National Sports Festival is more than just a competition; it’s a legacy project that transforms host cities,” he said. “Enugu has demonstrated impressive readiness and strong political will key ingredients for success. We are confident in their capacity to deliver.” Enugu clinched the hosting rights for the 2026 edition after a competitive bidding process. The festival is expected to attract thousands of athletes, officials, and sports enthusiasts from across Nigeria, building on the momentum of the Gateway Games held in Ogun State in 2024.
With its focus on early planning and infrastructure development, Enugu aims to not only surpass previous editions but also create a lasting legacy for sports development in the region.
