The Federal Government warns that 1,249 communities in 30 states and the FCT are at high risk of flooding in 2025. This follows a recent flood in Mokwa, Niger State, which killed over 200 people.
Water Resources Minister Joseph Utsev said the flood was caused by heavy rainfall, not dam releases, and urged states to act on early warnings. Some states have begun dredging, public awareness, and evacuations. The public can monitor risks via the Nigeria Hydrological Services flood dashboard.
