Nigeria gears up to Host African Junior Athletics Championship in Abeokuta

With just 35 days to go, Nigeria is finalizing preparations to host the 3rd edition of the African Junior Athletics Championship in Abeokuta, Ogun State a major continental event that will spotlight the next generation of African track and field talent.

Scheduled to run from July 16 to 20, 2025, the championship is being organized under the auspices of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA). The event will feature Under-18 and Under-20 athletes from across the continent, converging at the newly renovated MKO Abiola International Stadium. The stadium, which recently hosted the 22nd National Sports Festival, has undergone significant upgrades to meet international standards.

Organizers say over 500 athletes from more than 50 African countries are expected to participate, making it one of the largest junior athletic meets in the continent’s history. South Africa, the defending champions, are set to face stiff competition from Nigeria’s youthful squad, who are aiming to make a bold statement on home ground.

“This is not just a competition; it is a celebration of Africa’s future in track and field,” said Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission. “Nigeria is honored to host once again and to demonstrate its world-class capacity in organizing major sporting events.” Abeokuta, often referred to as the Gateway City, has been strategically selected for its expanding profile in sports development and its accessibility to local and international guests. With top-notch facilities and a passionate sporting community, the city is poised to deliver a memorable experience for athletes, officials, and fans.

The African Junior Athletics Championship is widely recognized as a launching pad for future global champions, with many of its alumni going on to become Olympic and World Championship medalists. As the countdown continues, anticipation is building both locally and across the continent. All eyes will be on Nigeria, a country with a storied athletics history, to deliver a world-class sporting spectacle once again.
