North Carolina Declares June 14 ‘Igbo Day’ to Celebrate Nigerian Heritage

Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina has officially proclaimed June 14, 2025, as “Igbo Day,” recognizing the cultural and economic contributions of the Igbo community from southeastern Nigeria.

The declaration highlights the community’s long-standing presence in the state, with many Igbos having lived there for over 50 years. Governor Stein praised their achievements in education, medicine, IT, law, and the arts, as well as their active involvement in civic and charitable initiatives.

The move also acknowledges the efforts of the Igbo Day Festival Organisation, established in 2022 to promote Igbo culture through music, language, and community values. The governor urged all residents to observe the day in recognition of the Igbo community’s rich heritage and ongoing contributions to North Carolina’s development.
