…. Team Imo reps makes striking appearance

The much-anticipated Gateway Games Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival officially commenced on Sunday, May 18, 2025, with a vibrant and colourful opening ceremony held at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The ceremony, reminiscent of a mini-Olympic spectacle, featured a grand match pass parade by contingents from across the country, each state proudly showcasing their athletes in cultural regalia and coordinated formations. The rich cultural heritage of Ogun State took center stage with traditional displays, dances, and performances that celebrated the state’s unique identity and history.
Musical performances added rhythm and glamour to the evening, highlighted by a soul-stirring solo rendition of the Nigerian National Anthem by renowned singer Asa. The crowd was later electrified by a thrilling performance from Afrobeat superstar Davido, who brought the stadium to life with a medley of hits that had spectators and athletes alike dancing in excitement.
The ceremony drew high-profile attendance from across Nigeria’s political and sporting circles. Notable dignitaries included the Vice President of Nigeria, His Excellency Alhaji Kashim Shettima, who delivered the President’s goodwill message. Also present were the former President, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo; Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun; Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma; and several other state governors, senators, commissioners for sports, and executives from the Nigerian Sports Commission (NSC).
Team Imo, who arrived in Abeokuta on Saturday with a contingent of 318 athletes and 118 officials, made a striking appearance during the parade in their traditional blue and white attire, garnering admiration from spectators and participants alike.
Addressing the audience, NSC Director General Bukola Olopade expressed optimism about the unifying power of sports and the significance of the festival in promoting national integration. His remarks were followed by a speech from NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, who highlighted the commission’s commitment to talent discovery and youth development through sports.
In his welcome address, the host governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, warmly received the athletes and officials, officially declaring the festival open. He emphasized Ogun State’s readiness to provide a world-class experience for all participants and expressed hope that the event would foster lasting friendships and healthy competition among Nigerian youths.
The Gateway Games Ogun 2024 now promises days of exhilarating athletic contests and camaraderie as athletes compete for glory and honor in Nigeria’s foremost multi-sport event.
