Team Delta, the reigning champions of the National Sports Festival, has departed Asaba for the 22nd edition of the competition with a 1,100-strong delegation. The contingent includes 704 athletes, 160 technical officials, 16 officiating officials, and 220 accompanying personnel.
The team embarked on the journey Friday morning with high hopes of once again asserting the state’s dominance on the national stage.
Addressing the contingent before departure, the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Honourable Onoriode Oborevwori, urged the athletes and officials to uphold the values of discipline, unity, and excellence as they represent the state.
“You are the pride of Delta State. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori remains unwavering in his support for sports as a key driver of youth development. Compete with pride, dignity, and the winning mentality that Delta is known for,” he said.
Honourable Oborevwori reminded the team of the magnitude of the task ahead, likening it to climbing a herculean mountain , one he believes they are fully equipped to overcome.
“Challenges will come, but with focus and determination, you will rise above them. Go and defend our title. Go and make Delta proud.”
Delta State, widely regarded as Nigeria’s sporting powerhouse, will be aiming to retain its position atop the medal table as the festival kicks off.
